With renewal dates approaching for some Power BI Premium subscriptions, it is important to understand whether a transition to Microsoft Fabric is required and when it should take place.
* For people without an Enterprise Agreement (EA)
Those without an EA will need to transition to a Fabric capacity at the end of their current agreement, as the sale and renewals for Power BI Premium per capacity SKUs (P-SKUs) have officially ended.
* For people with an Enterprise Agreement (EA)
Those with an EA can continue annual renewals until the end of their EA agreement. However, once the agreement ends, transitioning to Fabric capacity will be necessary to continue using Microsoft Fabric.
What the Transition Involves
The process involves converting Power BI Premium P1 to Fabric, which includes reallocating workspaces to the new Fabric capabilities. Administrators can speed up this process by assigning workspaces in bulk or using the automated migration tool.
A free Power BI Premium capacity is provided for the first 30 days after the previous subscription ends, matching the amount offered by the previously purchased P-SKU. This reduces the need to pay for two capacities simultaneously.
After 30 days, operations may begin to be throttled, and jobs could be delayed or rejected. After 90 days, access to Power BI data may be lost.
Planning the transition
The transition can be completed quickly if opting for a direct 1:1 reallocation. However, this is also an opportunity to review and optimize capacity management, ensuring the most effective allocation for future needs.
